If you’re wondering if Thai food is vegan friendly, the answer is a flavorful yes! Thai cuisine is famous for fragrant herbs, creamy coconut milk, spicy curries, and noodle dishes that are easy to enjoy vegan. Many Thai meals are already plant-based or require only a simple swap.

Thai food strikes a delicious balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors. Most of these flavors come from plants: lemongrass, galangal, Thai basil, lime, chilies, and coconut milk do the heavy lifting to create vibrant dishes.

Some Thai recipes use fish and shellfish sauces and pastes, though, so you need to know what to ask if you’re at a restaurant.

Here’s how to navigate Thai cuisine with confidence:

Tofu

Most Thai restaurants offer tons of tofu options, and tofu swaps in easily for meat or fish in practically every dish from curries, stir-fries, soups, and salads.

Watch for Fish Sauce and Shrimp Paste

Fish sauce (a salty liquid made from fermented fish) and shrimp paste are in some Thai dishes, so ask your server if it can be removed.

Fish feel pain, learn from one another, recognize familiar individuals, and even use tools. Similar to turtles, oysters hide inside their shells when they sense danger, snapping them shut tight to protect themselves. Removing oysters and shellfish from their ocean homes destroys the reefs they help build, damaging habitat that countless animals depend on.

Thai Curries

Many Thai curries—green curry, yellow curry, and red curry among them—get their rich base from coconut milk, which is naturally vegan. Ask whether the dish contains fish sauce or shrimp paste, and request it without if needed.

Noodles and Stir-Fries

Pad Thai is a popular dish consisting of stir-fried rice noodles. Sometimes it is cooked with eggs and fish sauce, but it can be made with soy or vegan fish sauce.

Pad see ew (stir-fried wide rice noodles) and pad kee mao, also called drunken noodles (stir-fried noodles with Thai basil and chilies), may include fish sauce too, but can be made with a vegan sauce instead.

Thai Soups: Tom Yum and Tom Kha

Tom yum (a hot and sour soup) and tom kha (a coconut milk soup) are typically made with fish sauce and stock as their base.

Vegan Thai Desserts

Save room for dessert. Mango sticky rice is one of Thailand’s most beloved sweets, and it’s traditionally made with just sticky rice, coconut milk, and fresh mango.

Khanom krok, bite-sized coconut pancakes with crisp edges and creamy centers, is another traditional treat that’s often vegan.

Every Animal Is Someone

Going vegan is one of the most delicious ways to help animals, and Thai cuisine makes it remarkably easy. With fragrant curries, satisfying noodles, flavorful soups, and decadent desserts, there’s no shortage of options.

Every fish, shrimp, and oyster is an individual, not an ingredient. So skip the fish sauce, load up on the tofu, and enjoy a Thai’d and true meal.

New to vegan dining? Thai restaurants are one of the easiest places to start. Once you learn which ingredients to ask about, ordering becomes second nature. Every vegan meal helps animals and shows restaurants that demand for compassionate options continues to grow. Progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about making choices that align with your values whenever you can.
